The Kholuy box producing process is long and labour-intensive. Its secrets are kept from the craft's birth moment till nowadays. These secrets are known to our workmen only.

Multilayered tubes are pressed from a qualitative wooden cardboard. Their form and size are various. These tubes are called “naviv” in Russian. They are saturated with flax oil and then the tubes are drying in special furnaces until oil becomes hard.

A workman makes semi finished items from naviv. Then he will need to prime it.

Boxes are primed with the mixture of flax oil, soot and clay.

The dried up prime is grinded and then workmen color the boxes with red and black varnish. Then painters can work with them.

The recipe of making paints came to us from time immemorial. Icon painters of ancient Russia worked with such kind of paints. The mineral powder is pounded with an egg yolk, water and vinegar. The correct preparation of the paints is the basic part of the painting.

Then an Artist can start working with a box.
The artist is educated to very detailed painting at special Kholui schools (a 5-year education). The artist works with very thin squirrel brushes.

The ornament is carried out by specially prepared mosaic gold with addition of cherry pitch.
To make gold shining, workmen polish it with a wolf's tooth.

The painted box is covered with several layers of varnish. The varnish surface becomes even on special material circles.

The final stage of making a box is polishing. The workman polishes the varnish till the small scratches disappear. The qualitative polishing emphasizes the work’s art advantages, reveals its brightness and depth.

The
Kholui artists have received many distinctions throughout history (here one from
Lenin)
