The base of Russian enamel ("finift") is copper plate. Fine filigree of silver-plated copper and silver are designed to help the viewer feel the warmth of skilful workmanship, rare and valuable in this technological age. The traditional Rostov method of creation begins with laying the enamel powder on the surface of the metal base by pulverizing, and several coats, usually white, can be built up before the plate is placed in a kiln, baked at high temperature, to create a foundation for the miniature painting. After being treated by fire the powder changes into a layer of sparkling colors. The magic of this transformation, the purity and transparency of enamel colors make these works of art unforgettable, they are the hallmark of enamel miniatures.
Then the artists produce their exquisite work in several stages of painting and firing, decorating articles with religious objects, portraits, landscapes and historical subjects. Many generations of craftsmen and artists have preserved the time-honored techniques and continue to create these unique treasures of magnificent beauty.
