This kind of bast shoes were the only shoes for Russian peasants during more than one thousand years. Up to the 30s of 20 th century in Russian villages a big part of countrymen wore bast sandals. The sandals got used in 4 days during the summer time, and 10 days during the winter. To weave them was not a simple work. The most skillful master could produce only 5 pairs of sandals per day. They could be made of bast of all kind of trees and even to be painted with different ornaments. Now nobody wears them but they are funny souvenirs which impart a some sort of rustic atmosphere to home.
