Russian Icon Mother of God of Kazan
Russian Icons
This icon depicts the Virgin in half-length with the blessing God-Child. In Russia, the icon was named after Kazan. The Virgin of Kazan was considered the protesters of all Russia and also of the Tsarist house of Romanovs. Mother of God of Kazan was produced at Monastery, by official icon maker of Russian Orthodox Church Sofrino. The village of Sofrino was mentioned for the first time in the 15th century. Nowadays Sofrino is conspicuous for two sights: the famous estate with the Smolensk Church (17th century) and the only one plant in the country producing plates for the Russian Orthodox Church.
