Russian icon, so-called Madonna of Vladimir, is one of the most famous icon of Russia. The composition is known as "The Mother holds the Child in her right arm and points at him with her left hand, while the Child puts his left arm around her neck and presses his cheek against hers. According to Church tradition, this icon was painted by the Apostle and Evangelist St, Luke. In the 5th century A. D., it was translated from Jerusalem to Constantinople. In the 12th century, Patriarch Lukas Chrysoberges of Constantinople sent it as a gift to Grand Duke Yuri Dolgoruky. Since that time the icon has been revered as the greatest shrine of the Russian people.
