Kizhi is a small island resting on the northeast end of Lake Onega. The island is a home to an outdoor museum of northern wooden architecture. The collection of structures, consist of churches, chapels, bell towers, peasant houses, granaries, barns, windmills, and bath houses - all brought from around the Onega region to collectively illustrate the styles of architecture common to the Russian north. The most remarkable creation on the island is the Cathedral of the Transfiguration. Thirty thousand shingles on twenty one separate cupolas are situated on the exterior's five tiers. Its construction is pretty impressive considering that this cathedral was built in 1714, without a single nail, by one man, using only his ax. According this legend this man, named Nestor, upon completion of his creation, through his ax in the Lake Onega lake with words "There never was, nor will there ever be such."
The box is painted on papier-mache base by tempera paints and with gold. The box is finely finished with special lacquer.
