The art of the Russian lacquer miniature derived from old Russian icon painting and is really unique. Everybody who looks at the boxes and plates painted by Russian miniature artists will be astonished at the incredible detail touched in by the artist's brush. Four village centres remain the chief source for the jewel like boxes painted with exquisite miniatures of Russian legends and village life. Among the favourite themes are the folk tales about Snowmaiden, the Firebird, the Frog Princess, Little Hump-Backed Horse and the tales written by the famous Russian poet and writer Alexander Pushkin such as Ruslan an Ludmilla, the Tale about Tsar Saltan. Overall, this work is a very good value and a lovely miniature. The box is signed with the name of the artist, village and style. Perfect box for bird-lovers. All these open eyes to a vision of ancient, legendary Russia, whoes soul is reflected in these vivid portrayals of myth and customs. Each box needs much of preparation. It is made of papier mache, which is moulded, matured, steeped in linseed oil, then turned to the desired shape. When a box is ready for painting, the artist starts creating the picture layer by layer, for depth and translucency. Gold is added last for detail and for fine. Lastly, many coats of lacquer and polishing bring the box to a glossy and durable finish. The fabulous lacquered box is handmade by the Kholui Association that specializes in miniature painting boxes of papier-mache. This material is more lasting than the wood, which can crack because of time or moisture. Papier-mache is an art which has deep roots in the Russian history. Producing of every item is a very long and labour-consuming process. The beautiful painting which covers the boxes is very detailed and originates from the Russian icon painting. The main aspects in producing of miniatures are right preparation and blending of paints (all paints are handmade), several stages of lacquering and polishing, and of course the mastery of the Kholui artists. The principal topics of miniatures are the landscapes and architectual monuments of Russia, the plots and protagonists of Russian fairy tales, fables and legends.
