The troika speeds along. The troika leaps ahead. I am going to my beloved. These words from a folk song splendidly reflect the love for the famous Russian teams of three horses harnessed to sleighs. According to ancient tradition, a bridegroom drove up to the porch of his bride only in a troika. The sleigh bells jingle musically, and the horses stretch out their necks. This image is forever associated with traditional Russian paintings on lacquer. Artists of the Palekh School very often used the subject to decorate the small boxes which were a Russian national handicraft. This picture portrays the episode from the famous Russian folk fairy tale. The kind magician Morozko is in charge of cold and ice, he also takes care of his woods and once he finds a girl almost frozen to death under his favourite tree. Fascinated by her modesty and inner kindness he saves the girl, warms her, endows her with the presents. The miniature is executed with the use of silver, gold and egg tempera and radiates some special light, which will remind you about cold Russian winter. Simple young couple, the animals which live in the woods of the Master, and wise face of Morozko leaves on the contrary warm impression. This marvelous decorative lacquered box is handmade by the Kholui Association that specializes in miniature painting over papier-mache boxes. This material is more lasting than the wood, which can crack because of time or moisture. Papier-mache is an art which has deep roots in the Russian history. Producing of every item is a very long and labour-consuming process. The beautiful painting which covers the boxes is very detailed and originates from the Russian icon painting. The main aspects in producing of miniatures are right preparation and blending of paints (all paints are handmade), several stages of lacquering and polishing, and of course the mastery of the Kholui artists. The principal topics of miniatures are the landscapes and architectual monuments of Russia, the plots and protagonists of Russian fairy tales, fables and legends.
