The magical Snowmaiden steals the heart of Lel, the shepherd, on this good sized box from Kholui. Their elegant posture is echoed by the arching tree trunk, creating a strong sense of movement within the composition, which is echoed throughout the scene, from the Maiden's billowing scarf, to the swirling wisps of clouds.
The scene is nicely painted in the traditional style, with a few well placed gold accents. The careful use of color conveys the frosty background, as well as the warmth between the figures, beautifully. The scene is framed by an elegant border of silver and gold, which is echoed on the sides of the box. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It rests and four round legs, and bears the Kholui insignia and the words, "Made in Russia" on the base. A delightful, romantic scene.
