This charming lacquer box shows one scene from the Russian fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful", this traditional favorite is densely painted with details in crisp, bright colors. It seems that no space has gone unfilled, to add lovely effect. This fairy tale, well-known to everyone in Russia tells us about Vasilisa the Beautiful, walking through the forest at night. She was sent by her evil step-sisters to Baba-Yaga. She met a horseman, who is smitten by her beauty. The forest looms around Vasilisa, looking innocent at first glance, with wildflowers springing up around her, but on closer inspection, a spider lurks in the shadows, and a raven stands guard over the hut of the witch, Baba Yaga.
The scene is nicely painted in the traditional Kholui style, with a few well placed gold accents. The careful use of color conveys the black background, as well as the warmth between the figures, beautifully. The scene is framed by an elegant border of silver and gold, which is echoed on the sides of the box. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer.
