One of the most known tales in Russia represents the desire to gain a victory and keep your own kingdom strong and prosperous. In this fairy tale the Tsar receives a gift - the Golden Cockerel. The cock had a power to predict and warn of enemies' attacks, and the Tsar was never taken by surprise. This box depicts the scene when the Tsar is getting the Golden Cockerel.
This lovely lacquer box is constructed from paper-mache made in Kholui style. Black lacquer acts as the background for the scene. The palette still appears wet to the touch. The interior of the box is completed with a bright red-orange that would even intensify any contents within. The box combines elegant style and fine craftsmanship.
Each item is really well-drawn, individual and colorful.
The background has been inlaid with light blue tone, which is very shiny and highlights the image nicely. The birds around the sides are drawn on a simpler, black background. A nice filigree pattern surrounds the lid, and a simpler dot pattern is on the edges of the base. Overall, this work is a very good value and a lovely miniature. The box is signed with the name of the artist, village and style. Perfect box for bird-lovers.
