Kiselev has selected this shape for box on which to paint this extraordinary panorama. Russian artist is a highly skilled artist whose forte is architectural scenes and monuments.
The work features the Spassky Monastery situated in the ancient Russian town of Yaroslavl.
Yaroslavl is quite big town 260 kilometers north of Moscow. It was founded by Yaroslav Mudry (“Wise”) in the 11th century. There are 630 000 inhabitants in the city. The main industries are machinery and oil industry, there's one of the biggest oil companies 'Slavneft' working there.
Yaroslavl starts from the Spassky monastery (Saviour monastery), that was founded in the 12th century at the place where Kotorosl River meets Volga River. Nowadays, on the territory of the monastery there's also a museum of history of Yaroslav region, and an exhibition of ancient Russian paintings, crafts, old hand-written and printed books.
The lines composed by the master are the ideal representation of the skill needed to draw them. Great depth of structure is composed with the smaller scale geometry. Browns and greens dominate the palette of this composition. Gold paint adds illumination to the domed roofs and crosses of the many cathedrals.
A wavy gold line accompanied with gold dots decorate the edges of the lid. The sides of the box are adorned with an elaborate filigree that is unique and original.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests on four legs. The work is signed, dated and titled by the artist.
