Immediately after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, the Bolsheviks merged their 20,000-man army, the Red Guards. The early Red Army was egalitarian but poorly disciplined.
After the Civil War, the Red Army became an increasingly professional military organization. The Red Army encircled and destroyed German forces in the city of Stalingrad in a battle that ended in February 1943. From the late 1940s to the late 1960s, the Soviet armed forces focused on adapting to the changed nature of warfare in the era of nuclear arms and achieving parity with the United States in strategic nuclear weapons.
After 1990 Soviet army was transformed to the Army of Russian federation.
