Product Description

A beautiful, with lots of details painting is a cheerful landscape inspired by a country splendor of Central Russia.
This traditional Kholui architectural miniature features art on the four sides, as well as the lid. Each panel depicts landmarks of St. Petersburg, one of the two major cities in Russia. This city, built in 1703 on the order of Tsar Peter I ("the Great"), is known for its monumental architecture, some of the most famous of them being reproduced here. The artist takes care to give an idea of the location of these buildings in relation to one another; if you study each of the side panels, you can see parts of the same buildings from different angles, depending on the focus of each drawing.
The artist uses a fairly naturalistic palette here, with most of the buildings being done in light colors to reflect the stone used to build them. Each scene has a moonlit night sky, giving a cool and peaceful setting to the work. This sense of calm is balanced by the motion in the swirling clouds and the waves striking the edges of the canals (which have given St. Petersburg the nickname "Venice of the North"). Small touches of gold paint in the roofs, domes, spires and a few other details add a bit of brightness to the scene, and each image is framed by a traditional gold filigree ornament.

The box is made of good-quality papier-mache. It is signed with the artist's name, village and title.
