Product Description

This small lacquer box is a perfect gift which always will remind you about Revolutionary past of Russia. It features the Russian battleship Aurora and the main sightseeings of St.Petersburg - St.Isaac's Cathedral and Admiralty. On 7 september, at 9.45 p.m., a blank shot from her forecastle gun signalled the start of the attack on the Winter Palace, which was to be the first episode of the October Revolution. Aurora's crew actually took part in the events of that night.
The box itself is made of the highest quality papier-mache and is covered with three layers of lacquer. Paper-mache does not absorb the paint and it is also protected by a thick layer of lacquer. This way colors will not fade and will stay vivid and bright for many dozens of years to come.
This lacquer box is made in Kholui style, which has characterisic of both of the former. It is a freer tradition, which permits its representatives a wider range of application. Black backgrounds, more subtle colors, more realisic figures.
This jewellery lacquer box is produced by the Kholui Association that specializes in producing handpainted boxes of papier-mache. This material is more lasting than the wood, which can crack because of time or moisture. Papier-mache is an art which has deep roots in the Russian history. Producing of every item is a very long and labour-consuming process. The beautiful miniature painting which covers the boxes is very detailed and originates from the Russian icon painting. The main aspects in producing of miniatures are right preparation and blending of paints (all paints are handmade), several stages of lacquering and polishing, and of course the mastery of the Kholui artists. The principal topics of miniatures are the landscapes and architectual monuments of Russia, the plots and protagonists of Russian fairy tales, fables and legends.
