The history of Russian shanson comes from the 19th centuries, when first penal-servitude songs appeared. The prisons were full of people being in opposition upon the authority, dreaming on free Russian society, democratic laws and such human rights as a right to speak openly and frankly, not being afraid of government to punish them.

During the soviet time, due to even harder authoritarism than it had been, the genre of shanson gained relevance again. At that time prisoners sang not just about freedom and Motherland, but love, Russian nature, their mothers, fathers, wives and children. Moreover, they began bring the song texts from Russian classical literature, for example, from Sergey Esenin's lyrics, which is still popular within shanson singers.

At the same time, a new kind of shanson appeared - criminal lyrics or blat (from Russian "blatnoy" - criminal, corrupted). The topics of every-day prison life and criminal's destiny are typical of this shanson's kind.

Blat was especially popular in Russia during 1990-s, when the country was in a deep crisis.
