Product Description

This icon, popular in Russia and in the Balkans, was brought to the Pochaev region of Volhynia (Voluinsk province) in 1559 by Neofit, Metropolitan of Constantinople. He gave it to Anna Goyskaya, after which time the icon began to manifest miracles. In 1597 Anna gave the icon to the community of monks on Pochaev Hill, a site already renowned for an appearance of the Mother of God in 1340, when she was seen surrounded by flames and left her footprint in stone.
This image is distinguished by the cloth which the Mother of God holds in her left hand as she supports her Son with the right.
A colorful and beautiful icon painted in Sofrino in a wooden base with stamping and annotation.
